Coche Beach (Playa La Punta) is the island's most iconic spot—renowned for its pristine white sands and calm, crystal-clear Caribbean waters .
The western coast offers world-class conditions for windsurfing, kiteboarding, and sand-yacht racing thanks to strong, steady winds and flat seas—among the best globally for such sports

Cultural stops include Iglesia San Pedro de Coche, and various tour operators offer boat or sailing excursions from Margarita.

Isla Margarita, known as the “Pearl of the Caribbean”, is the largest of Nueva Esparta state’s islands in the Caribbean Sea, located roughly 19 km off mainland Venezuela. It actually comprises two peninsular regions joined by an 18 km isthmus .
The island spans about 1,020 km² (390 sq mi), measuring ~78 km long and up to ~20 km wide, with a coastline of nearly 320 km
It features two major mountain ranges—on the western Macanao peninsula (highest peak around 760 m) and along the eastern Paraguachoa peninsula
The climate is hot and tropical year-round, moderated by sea breezes. Rainfall typically peaks from November to January, with the driest period from December to April.
Ideal travel months (sunny skies, low humidity, strong winds) are from December through April — especially for beach activities and kitesurfing
Santa Rosa de la Eminencia castle in La Asunción: built in the 17th century, it served as a prison and now houses a museum honoring independence heroine Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi
Fortaleza de San Carlos de Borromeo in Pampatar: a colonial fortress (completed in 1684) built to protect the harbor from pirate raids, now open to visitors as a restored museum site
Playa El Agua: Margarita’s most famous beach, nearly 4 km of golden sand lined with palms, restaurants, and shops, ideal for a relaxing day by the sea
Laguna de Las Marites Natural Monument: a hypersaline lagoon south of the island, rich in mangroves and birdlife (scarlet ibises, herons), declared a protected area in 1974
Tetas de María Guevara: twin breast-shaped hills near Restinga Lagoon, recognized as a Natural Monument and tied to a local legend of a mestiza heroine
Popular sports include kiteboarding and windsurfing, especially at El Yaque beach where wind conditions during the dry season are perfect. Equipment rentals and lessons are available
Home to the critically endangered Margarita Island capuchin monkey (Sapajus apella margaritae), found only on this island — conservation zones and national parks support the species’ survival
The main towns — Porlamar (~85 000 people), Pampatar, and La Asunción — are in the more developed east, which houses most tourist infrastructure including hotels, restaurants, and shops
A free-port status introduced in 1974 promotes duty‑free shopping for both locals and visitors
You can fly into Santiago Mariño Caribbean International Airport via connections from Caracas, or take a ferry from cities like Puerto la Cruz or Cumaná
